Why are My Brakes Grinding?

Mechanic Adjusting Brake Pad

When your braking system is working properly, you’ll only notice the sounds of your stereo while driving through East Baton Rouge. But sometimes, your peace and quiet is disrupted by odd sounds – like the metallic clanging of brakes grinding. So, why are my brakes grinding? There are a number of issues that can result in brake noise, and that’s why it’s important to visit a certified service center as soon as possible. In fact, the National Highway Safety Administration has found that faulty brakes could be a factor in as many as 25% of all road accidents. Let’s get started with some of the most common causes of brakes making grinding noise.

Brakes Grinding When Stopping

To start, when do you notice your brakes grinding? If you experience your brakes grinding when stopping, here are some factors to investigate:

  • Do your brakes make noise when stopping or slowing? Brake pads may be to blame. Brake pads wear down over time, and they make a squealing noise known as “brake scrubbing” when they need attention. Eventually, the squealing sound turns into a grinding sound.
  • Do you notice a sharper grinding noise and maybe even vibrations in your brake pedal? This is the sound of your brake disc and calipers. The remedy could be a simple brake pad replacement, but you might need a disc or rotor replacement instead.
  • Do you hear the sound only when you stop at full force? Your Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) could be the problem. ABS only activates when you hit the brake pedal hard, and it can even cause a rumbling sensation in the pedal.

Brakes Grinding When Driving

Do you notice your brakes making grinding noise as you navigate Ascension? This is often due to road debris getting caught between your caliper and rotors. It could be as simple as a stuck rock, but it’s important to get your brakes checked and cleaned off as soon as possible. The longer the debris remains in your brakes, the more damage it’s likely to cause.
